L'Alt Camp is one of the three regions promoting the Ruta del Cister, a brand that favors the cultural tourism that has led this order in a territory where the monasteries of Santes Creus (located in Aiguamúrcia, in l'Alt Camp), Poblet (in Vimbodí-Poblet, in the Conca de Barberà) and Vallbona (in Vallbona de les Monges, in l'Urgell) are its main exponents.
The Cistercian monasteries date from the 12th century. In all of them you can find excellent sculptural and architectural samples of Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque. The cloisters, the royal tombs and the churches constitute an enviable cultural heritage. The monastery of Poblet, the largest Cistercian monastic complex that is still preserved, is a World Heritage Site (UNESCO); Vallbona is the only monastery that hosts a community of nuns, and that of Santes Creus, currently without monks, is a refuge of light, art and knowledge.
In summer, in addition, the three monasteries celebrate music festivals.
A visit to any of these Cistercian monasteries is unavoidable if you visit any town in the Alt Camp.
